Rep. Graves votes in support of REINS Act

Washington, Dec 7 -

U.S. Rep. Tom Graves (R-GA-09) issued the following statement after voting for H.R. 10, the Regulations from the Executive in Need of Scrutiny (REINS) Act.  Rep. Graves is also a co-sponsor of this legislation.  The REINS Act would send any major rule that is estimated to cost the U.S. economy more than $100 million, or have adverse effects on consumers or the business climate, to Congress for an up-or-down vote.  If Congress doesn’t approve the regulation in 70 days, under the REINS Act, it would not take effect.

“House Republicans are working to advance positive solutions aimed at improving confidence and certainty for America’s job creators.  Today’s vote on the REINS Act is an important part of the effort to put a check on the flurry of rules and regulations being created by the executive branch.”

“America’s job creators are buried under a regulatory burden of around $1.75 trillion each year.  This year alone, the cost of new regulations is projected to be almost $70 billion.  It’s estimated that small businesses pay approximately $10,000 per employee just to comply with federal regulations.  The knock-on effects of the regulatory burden are higher prices for consumers, lower wages, and reduced hiring.”

“The REINS Act requires Congress to approve all major rules and regulations which would have a significant impact on the economy.  Right now, the executive branch has too much unilateral authority to impose regulations on America’s businesses and job creators.  The runaway regulatory environment has produced a slew of onerous regulations that are leading to higher costs to the economy and fewer job opportunities.  Breaking down barriers to economic expansion and job creation starts with getting the massive and burdensome regulatory regime under control, so entrepreneurs can be set free from unnecessary costs and requirements. ”
