House Passes Rep. Tom Graves' Bill To Restore 40 Hour Work Week

Today, the U.S. House passed the Save American Workers Act, a bill cosponsored by U.S. Rep. Tom Graves (R-GA-14) to repeal the 30-hour definition of full time employee in Obamacare and replace it with a 40-hour definition. According to Hoover Institute research, 2.6 million workers are at risk for reduced hours due to the 30-hour definition. The research further showed that 89% of the impacted workers do not have a college degree, while 63% of impacted workers are women. Businesses that can’t afford Obamacare’s health insurance requirements for full-time workers or the resulting noncompliance fine will, or have already, cut workers hours below 30 per week, creating a group sometimes called the “29ers.”

“Obamacare is estimated to cut the hours and take home pay of millions of American workers,” said Rep. Tom Graves. “That means less money for rent, gas and groceries for families in Georgia and across the country. Many have already suffered this fate under the law. President Obama often talks about giving the American people a raise, so I urge him to support repealing his harmful policy so we can return billions of dollars to workers’ wallets today.”

The Congressional Budget Office reported that the Save American Workers Act (H.R. 2575) would increase cash wages by $75 billion and cut taxes by $63 billion.
