Rep. Graves Statement on Storm Devastation in North Georgia

Trenton, GA, April 28, 2011 -

U.S. Rep. Tom Graves (R-GA-09) issued the following statement after touring the devastated areas in Flintstone, Ringgold, and Trenton, Georgia, following the violent storm and tornadoes of April 27:

“My family and I offer our prayers and deepest sympathy for the thousands in our community who are suffering great losses today.  This powerful storm has taken many lives and injured hundreds more.  Homes and businesses that stood just yesterday afternoon now lie across fields in heaps of timber and mangled steel.

“While the scenes of destruction are breathtaking and vast, the lasting impression is of the many displays of courage and resiliency from my fellow Georgians.  Today, I met people who, despite losing all they had in the storm, are pressing on, encouraging each other, and already working hard to rebuild.  For those wondering what the view is from the ground, my North Georgian neighbors are standing strong and the goodness of our community is shining through the dark clouds overhead.

“I thank the many emergency responders who have been serving this area since yesterday.  They were the first sign of hope after the storm passed, and we are all grateful for their tireless efforts to assist the affected and search for the missing.  I also thank Governor Deal and the Georgia Emergency Management Agency for their effectiveness in sending resources to Catoosa, Dade, and the other impacted counties.  While there is a long road ahead of us, I know my community is up to the task, and I look forward to working with Governor Deal and local officials to remove any federal barriers that would inhibit a swift response and recovery effort.”
