Rep. Tom Graves: We’re Building a Legal Wall Against Executive Amnesty

Washington, March 17, 2016 - Rep. Tom Graves (R-GA-14) today voted for and the House passed H.Res. 639, legislation authorizing the Speaker to file an amicus brief on behalf of the House of Representatives in the court case Texas v. United States, in which 26 states, including Georgia, sued the Obama administration over its program to extend legal status to millions of illegal immigrants.

“We’re building a legal wall against executive amnesty,” said Rep. Graves. “This legislation allows the people’s voice to be heard in the Supreme Court fight against the president’s unconstitutional executive amnesty plan. This is an important step toward reining in the Executive Branch and reclaiming the power of Congress.”

As a result of the lawsuit filed by the states, on February 16, 2015, a federal judge blocked implementation of the administration’s program to extend legal status to millions of illegal immigrants while the lawsuit worked its way through the court system. The judge’s decision was then upheld by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit on November 9, 2015. The case will now be heard by the Supreme Court.
