Every Baby Deserves the Opportunity to Live

Washington, April 2, 2019 -

Rep. Tom Graves (R-GA-14) today joined more than 150 of his colleagues in the U.S. House of Representatives to sign a discharge petition to force a vote on the Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act (“Born Alive Act”). The Born Alive Act protects babies that are born alive following an attempted abortion. It would ensure these babies are given the same medical care as a baby born at a similar age.

House Republicans have asked for a vote on the Born Alive Act more than 25 times. Each time, the Democrats refused to put this legislation on the floor.

Led by House Republican Whip Steve Scalise, once the discharge petition reaches 218 signatures the Born Alive Act can bypass committee and head straight to the House floor for a vote. The petition will be open through the remainder of the 116th Congress.

“Since before I was ever elected to public office, I have always supported the innocent unborn. That’s why today I support the Born Alive Act. All we are asking for is a simple vote. Every baby – born and unborn – deserves the opportunity to live. Surely Washington can be their voice,” Rep. Graves said.
